The author of “On Tyranny,” scares us half to death, in a very good way.
Because history is constantly in motion, and so are repressive cycles.
As we are witnessing, we, and the rest of the world’s democracies, are
vulnerable to repression, unless we dare to look, and to stay alert.
Our founders placed the Rule of Law above kings, above religions, above
ideologies, above the factional interests of men. They fought tyrannical
forces from without, and tyrannies from within the human heart, to create
an opening in history for a unique brand of individual freedom in the world.
Timothy Snyder shows us there is a playbook for undermining that hard won
structure of freedom, and it repeats in history, over and over. His years
of scholarship have led to his a unique way of breaking it all down.
