NOW: Christian leaders that support abortion
Pathways from September 11th to January 6th
Today’s focus is…
…on the many Christians leaders, including evangelicals, who
agreed with the Supreme Court back in 1973 that a woman’s
sovereignty over her own body is a Constitutional right that
belongs to the privacy of her individual conscience, and not to
the state. The reality of that position was later swept under the
revisionist veil of abortion, to cover over truth that the
desire to protect tax exemptions for segregated schools, not
abortion, was the original issue that mobilized the Christian
right’s political movement. For many in the movement, “religious freedom”
has become a code word for political, often racist, agendas.
Since when did our founding principles ever include ascendency of
one religion? In fact, our founding principles and Constitution
protect against that they thing.
